Rebecca Lock and my other Lock ancestors

Rebecca Lock (1779-1861).
My 4th great-grandmother.

Rebecca was the first of the Locks to marry into my family, when she wed Charles Goulty in Woodbastwick, Norfolk, on 17 May 1796. She’d been born in the village and baptised at St Fabian and St Sebastian’s Church on 15 April 1779 – her parents were Stephen Lock and Lydia Gladding (see below).

For details of their marriage and children, see the Goulty family page.

Rebecca died in 1861 and was buried at All Saints’ Church in nearby Salhouse. Her name on the gravestone was spelled the biblical ‘Rebekah’. Charles had died in 1840.

Stephen Lock (1733-1811) and Lydia Gladding (1740-1822).
My 5th great-grand parents.

Rebecca’s father Stephen Lock was born in 1733 and baptised at St Mary’s Church in Tunstead, Norfolk, on 30 September. His parents were William Lock and Amy Atkins (see below), who married just a few months before his birth.

Lydia was not Stephen’s first wife. He married spinster Elizabeth Newton at St Fabian and St Sebastian’s Church in Woodbastwick, Norfolk, on 25 October 1756, although where she came from is unclear. They lived in the village and Elizabeth gave birth to at least four children – Elizabeth Jnr, Amy, Stephen and Mary. Elizabeth Snr died in 1771 and was buried on 25 July.

Widower Stephen married Lydia Ward nee Gladding on 28 April 1777 in Woodbastwick. Where she came from is also a mystery but she married John Ward in the village on 28 September 1758 and had several children. He died in the 1770s but two John Wards were buried in the village so it’s unclear whether his funeral was in 1773 or 1774.

Stephen and Lydia had one known child. He died in 1811 and was buried in Woodbastwick on 8 October. Lydia lived until 1822 and was buried in the village on 1 September.

Stephen and Lydia’s known children were:

  • Elizabeth Lock (1757-????), my 4th great-grand aunt. Elizabeth was baptised on 4 December 1757 at St Fabian and St Sebastian’s Church in Woodbastwick, Norfolk. She married Robert Wright at St Benedict’s Church in Horning, a few miles away. The family is difficult to track because of the sheer number of Wrights in Norfolk. The couple had three known children:
    • Robert Wright, born in 1786 and baptised in Belaugh, Norfolk.
    • Robert Wright, baptised in Belaugh, Norfolk, in 1790.
    • Harriet Wright, baptised and died in Horning, Norfolk, in 1794.
  • Amy Lock (1760-????), my 4th great-grand aunt. Amy was baptised on 17 February 1760 at St Fabian and St Sebastian’s Church in Woodbastwick, Norfolk, and married John Patterson there on 14 December 1789. I’ve not found a burial record for either of them that I’m happy with. They had several children:
    • William Patterson, baptised in Woodbastwick in 1790. He married Elizabeth Howes in Thrigby, Norfolk, in 1811 and worked as an agricultural labourer. After being widowed he married Patience Brown in Great Yarmouth in 1842, but she died in 1845. He died some time after the 1851 census.
    • Eliza Patterson, who was baptised in Woodbastwick in 1792. She married agricultural labourer John Markham in Burlingham, Norfolk, in 1811 and raised a family, moving around with work. Census records track them in Lingwood and then in 1861, to Cantley where Eliza was a widow working as a housekeeper.
    • Sarah Patterson, baptised in Woodbastwick in 1793 but not tracked beyond.
    • Jonathan Patterson, baptised in Woodbastwick in 1796. He married at some point but was widowed (no records found) but he married as a widower in 1844 in Great Yarmouth, his bride being widow Priscilla Baxfield. She lived until 1890 but Jonathan died in 1849 in Yarmouth.
  • Stephen Lock (1762-1842), my 4th great-grand uncle. Stephen was baptised on 26 December 1762 at St Fabian and St Sebastian’s Church in Woodbastwick, Norfolk, and married Mary Harris in the parish of Thurne with Ashby and Oby on 13 August 1786. She was born there and was baptised on 20 September 1766, her parents being John and Mary Harris. They had four known children in Thurne but in later years lived in the parish of Repps with Bastwick, Norfolk. Poll books from the 1830s record that Stephen was living in his own freehold property with land in Repps. Mary died there in 1838 and was buried on 28 January. The 1841 census showed Stephen listed as a farmer living in Varleys Lane with his married daughter Sarah Gilbert and her children. He died the following year and was buried on 18 December. Stephen and Mary had the following children:
    • William Lock. He was born in Thurne with Ashby and Oby in 1788 and married Gifford Campbell there in 1808. They raised a family in Repps, Yarmouth and Rollesby while he worked as a husbandman but she died in 1836, leaving William to marry again. His second bride was widow Ann Vincent (nee Smith born in 1799), who he married in 1838 at Rollesby under the name William Harris Lock. He worked there as an agricultural labourer but the 1851 census also records that he was on parish relief. Ann died in 1853, William in 1861.
    • Mary Lock, who was born in 1794 in Thurne with Ashby and Oby. She must’ve died young but no record has been found so far.
    • Mary Ann Harris Lock. Born in 1798 in Thurne with Ashby and Oby, she married William Knights in Repps with Bastwick in 1827. I’ve not been able to find them after this.
    • Sarah Lock. Born in 1805 in Thurne with Ashby and Oby, she married George Gilbert in Repps with Bastwick in 1835 but he died there in 1840. Sarah lived with her father in the village for a time with her two children and stayed in the neighbourhood for the rest of her life. She died in 1879.
  • Mary Lock (1766-1807), my 4th great-grand aunt. Mary was baptised on 1 January 1767 at St Fabian and St Sebastian’s Church in Woodbastwick, Norfolk, and married Benjamin Harper there in 1795. He died in 1803 and was buried in the village of Halvergate, Norfolk, on 18 December. Mary didn’t survive for long either, dying in 1807. She was buried in Halvergate on 6 October. The couple had three children:
    • Benjamin Harper. Born in 1797 in Halvergate, he married Rose Bowles in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, in 1832. They raised a family in the town, where Benjamin worked as a beachman. She died in 1848, Benjamin in 1865.
    • Stephen Harper. Born in 1799 in Halvergate, he married Amy Church there in 1821 and had several children. He was an agricultural labourer and stayed in the parish all his life, but Amy died in 1834. The censuses of 1841 and 1851 list him living with a Mary Trower or Tower as his housekeeper. He married her in the village in 1854. He died in 1870.
    • Tristram Harper. Born in 1801 in Halvergate, he married Elizabeth Peckstone there in 1832 and together they raised a family. He died in 1848, the cause of death given as epilepsy.

William Lock (1710-1785) and Amy Atkins (17??-17??).
My 6th great-grandparents.

William Lock was born in 1710 and baptised in Thurne with Ashby and Oby, Norfolk, on 14 February. His parents were Robert Lock and Elizabeth (see below).

William married Amy Atkins at St Mary’s Church in Tunstead, Norfolk, on 27 June 1733, but where she came from is unclear. I’ve found no baptism for her, although it’s possible that she was a widow. The couple settled in Tunstead and raised their children.

William died in Tunstead in 1785 and was buried on 20 September, described as a pauper on the records. This meant he was receiving support from the parish. Amy’s death record is another I’ve not found for her.

William and Amy’s children were:

  • Stephen Lock (1733-1811), my 5th great-grandfather. See above for details of his life.
  • Amy Lock (1744-1762), my 5th great-grand aunt. Amy was baptised on 15 April 1744 at St Mary’s in Tunstead but died young and was buried there on 18 April 1762.
  • Sarah Lock (1744-????), my 5th great-grand aunt. Sarah was baptised on 15 April 1744 at St Mary’s in Tunstead so may well have been Amy’s twin sister. I’ve not traced her beyond her baptism.
  • Ann Lock (1747-????), my 5th great-grand aunt. Ann was baptised on 23 November 1747 at St Mary’s in Tunstead but then disappears from the records.
  • William Lock (1750-1765), my 5th great-grand uncle. William was baptised on 1 August 1750 at St Mary’s in Tunstead but died young and was buried there on 3 May 1765.
